Why Consistency Matters More Than Perfection

Welcome to the Marketing Over Coffee Blog, your daily dose of tips, tricks and all things marketing. Grab your coffee, have a seat and let’s talk consistency.

When you think about posting online what comes to mind first? It may be an endless worry of what to post, where to post or constantly comparing your ideas to other businesses like yours. This loop of trying to post the perfect thing ends up stopping us from posting at all and your business ends up suffering anyways.

Although we don’t like to admit it, social media has become the most easily accessible form of marketing for your business and if you aren't utilizing it, you're literally leaving money on the table.

One of the biggest misconceptions about social media marketing is that every post has to be flawless. The truth is, your audience isn’t expecting perfection from you. They aren’t analyzing every post you make, they are simply looking for consistency.

Think about your favorite local coffee shop. You keep going back because you know what to expect. They’re open when they say they’ll be open, the coffee tastes familiar, and you trust them. Social media works much the same way. Showing up regularly builds familiarity, and familiarity builds trust.

That doesn’t mean you need to post every day. In fact, posting too much can not only burn you out, but it can lose your audience too. Customers want to see you consistently, but not feel overwhelmed by your presence.

The goal isn’t to be perfect.

The goal is to stay present.

👉How do you stay consistent?

One of the hardest things with social media is getting into a routine that is actually sustainable. The worst thing you can do is start to show up, gain the trust of your followers and then disappear.

Instead of hitting the gas full throttle, do my 3 day grind instead:

✨Day 1: Brainstorm. Sit down for 20 minutes and write out as many ideas as you can. This is what you will base your content around. When in doubt, think of these things: Education, Connection and Entertainment. If you can do one of those things, you’re good to go! Determine how many days a week you can consistently post, even if it its one, and pick the day/s.

✨Day 2: Create content. It doesn't have to be perfect, just make something. Film a video of yourself educating your audience. Snap an image of your business, a product or something that brings you joy. Introduce yourself or your staff. It doesn't have to be a new, original, creative idea. Just be you!

✨Day 3: Write your captions and schedule your content. When writing your caption remember this simple guideline:

  • An image or video with heavy content/informative = simplified caption (1-2 sentences)

  • A simple video or photo with little to no information = in debt, deeper dive caption and call to action. (ex. “DM me for more” “comment for more information”)

You can schedule content for easy posting through meta business suite or other social media management tools.

By splitting up the workload over 3 days you can create a consistent and manageable schedule and begin to show up for your audience.
